SC State Fair 2013

The SC State Fair is full of all kinds of people, as Miranda Lambert sings in her new song: All Kinds of Kinds. Its certain that the fair is where you will see all kinds of people that keeps the world going. People all over the country travel state to state selling their food that they have made their own. People come from all over the state of South Carolina to see whats new, to see all the new shows and most of all to taste the food. We all know its bad for us but we only get 1 day out of the year to eat deep fried everything and not feel about it.

Saturday October 12th, was the McCallister's day at the fair. You may say, the fair, really, why I say yes its the best place for cheap entertainment and to people watch if your into that sort of thing. During the car ride over Ray printed out all the activities and shows with descriptive descriptions of each. As he read each description we would pick what we wanted to see and would try to plan around the schedule when we could see it too.

When we arrived it was just in time for the Bear show. Yes, you may think were there real bears? And I tell you yes, there were several, but the ones that we saw were all small. We were hoping to see a big grizzly bear but no. The people that put on the show were from Myakka City Florida, where some of my relatives live. This show was cute, but it was meant more for smaller children on how the woman spoke during the show.

After our first show we toured the artist building. The building was full of artwork painted by gifted artists, to college, to high school all the way down to elementary artists. Some of the work was impressive but some of it was like: that's art I could do that. Us McCallister's aren't that much into art not that we don't like it we just don't understand the inner lining of art.

By this time it was time to get some lunch. Prior to arriving I was consistent on getting a corn dog but when I saw the sausage dog with sauteed onions and peppers, I couldn't say no. I ordered the spicy sausage dog topped with onions, peppers and ketchup. I do have to say it was mighty delicious even the bread was amazing. I did order chips too, but they weren't my favorite so Ray ate those.

Then we made our way into the baked goods building. Let me tell you this building smelled amazing. All the baked goods were in cabinets for judging with the awards next to the winners. It was tempting not to open the cabinet and just have a bite of one of the many pound cakes. We did get an Otis Mayer chocolate chip cookies. They were 2 for a $1 and you could buy milk for .50. We both enjoyed our cookies with milk while people watching outside on the picnic table.

Our next show was the K-9 dog diving. Yes, the dogs really did dive. You may ask how? And I reply with a pool. Yes, they had a big above ground pool marked off with footage to mark how far each dog would jump. It was amazing, the trainer would throw a frisbee and the dog would run off the ramp, jump high in the air, grab the frisbee, then fall in the water, and shake himself hard as he got out of the water. The trainer did this with a few dogs and the crowd went wild.

The next animal show was the pig racing. Yes, pig racing. It ranged from baby pigs all the way up to full grown size pigs. The trainer named the pigs making sure that the word bacon or ham would be in their name. Such as: Lindsey LoHam. It was cute and so were the pigs. The pigs would race around the circle as seen in the picture hoping they would be the first to get the oreo cookie at then end of the race.

We walked through another building filled with which looked like flea market material. But what caught our eye was the man made sand castle. The man was still working on his masterpiece. We stopped to capture the castle in a photo.

Before departing the fair we took a ride on the ski lift. I noticed this ride last year so this year I wanted to take part in it. And it was amazing, you got to see everything. It was getting closer to evening so the fair started to get more crowded. We both enjoyed it very much.

We made one last stop at one of the food selling vendors, for a funnel cake apple cinnamon sundae. Let me tell you it was delicious! It was a special ending to a fun day at the fair.

Till next year at the SC State Fair!
