Where the McCallister's live they have the best of both worlds. The lake out their front door and public woods out back across the road. We figured it out it was public land in the fall but never toured the woods due to hunters back there, not knowing where they were and we didn't want to mess up their set. So we waited until season was over and we took a walk through the woods.
Me getting ready
The first Saturday of 2014 we both dressed warm, wore bright orange, had our 22's unloaded with bullets in our pockets, ready to load as soon as we made it into the woods. Prior to our big hunt of squirrels Ray had to site in his gun since it had been awhile it had been shot. Then we both went off walking through the peaceful quiet woods trying to find the perfect place to bag a few squirrels.

We both made our way through a thick patch and into the woods. Ray made his way to high ground thinking and hoping he would see more squirrels than I. But that didn't happen. I made my way to a nice tree to lean on giving me the advantage of seeing and listening to the squirrels move. As I sat patiently waited no squirrels were scene so I decided if walked to lower ground in the woods the squirrels would appear. But it didn't happen. There were no squirrels to be scene or to be shot.
Taking a selfie
As I walked and looked around at the beautiful woods it made my soul sink into a peaceful state something that I crave of the outdoors. I began walking through the big woods with tall trees with sounds of the wildlife all around it made me seem so small in life. Being outdoors is something special. Its something that I will always treasure that my dad introduced me to and gave to me.
Our first big squirrel hunt of the year wasn't a big success but we strive for the big hunt in the upcoming weeks as it gets warmer. Ray was hopeful for a squirrel and hopes our next hunt will be more successful. Jessica was happy Ray took her out to spend quality time together in the outdoors. No date together compares to being in the outdoors like squirrel hunting.
:)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you guys had a good time making memories! So when you do bag some squirrels are you going to make some stew and write a post about how it turned out?
This is something we both have in common. Not bagging squirrels but the deep comfort and joy of just walking through the woods and enjoying the great outdoors. It is a blessing I never take for granted. We need to get together one of these Fridays soon and go for a hike.
ReplyDeleteBagging a squirrel -- it must run in the family because if I remember it correctly - that was one of Bill and my first dates - was sitting in the big woods looking for squirrels lol I don't remember seeing any then either! I would never cook/eat any squirrels that Bill would bring home -- but now (after Uncle Steve's famous frying) I've learned to enjoy eating them too!
